My Past Adventures In Television Land

A publicity photo circa 1985 for News 15 WANE-TV, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  That’s me in the center with the tie.  At my left is Rick Portrikus. We were supposed to look like we were producing the 6PM news

Recently I was reviewing a resume and it reminded me of an old story from TV Land.  Back in the days before the personal computer people created their resumes on a machine called a typewriter.  Some people knew how to type, others didn’t.  I did so a young co-worker asked me to type his resume.  He was a part time TV News production assistant who was looking for full time work and was quite literally “fresh off the farm” from one of the little towns around Ft. Wayne.  As I was typing up the resume I noted that his job history listed every single job he ever had.  I advised him that maybe he should leave off his very first job.  He had listed as his first job “Shoveled manure at my uncle’s farm when I was 14.” I took it off the resume, but in retrospect I think that perhaps shoveling shit and the TV news did have a lot in common.

Live TV in the 1970′s: A Christmas Parade

Have you seen the movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy with Will Ferrell? Not only have I seen the movie…I lived it. I worked in local live television in the 1970′s. I produced and directed live TV newscasts at WJIM-TV in Lansing, Michigan. Before that I was a production assistant on newscasts as well as specials like the holiday special “Christmas Parade”. It was live TV and funny things happen on live TV.

Here’s the story: “A Christmas Parade”.
